David D. Grace, producer of “Pirate Pride”, is a 1977 graduate of Proviso East High School in Maywood, IL. David attended Western Illinois University and DeVry University. His passion for Proviso East basketball began at an early age as his father, David, introduced him to what “Pirate Pride” was all about. His cousins, Tyrone and Billy Allen were members of the Proviso East varsity basketball teams during the 1967 and 1969 seasons, respectively. It became a family affair to attend games as the entire Grace family were Pirate fans. David, along with his brother and sisters, looked forward to every Friday & Saturday night to meet up with their lifetime friends, Cartrese “Chip” Carswell, Grady “Gar” Rivers, Jr. and Glenn “Doc” Rivers. At Proviso East, they witnessed some of the best basketball ever played on the high school level. In 1969, as racial tensions were running rampant through Maywood and Proviso East, the basketball team won the IHSA State Championship, bringing an entire community together and permeating a passion for high school basketball that still exists today.
David was compelled to tell the story of Proviso East Basketball and attempt to answer the question, “How is it that so many great athletes come out of a high school that serves such a small community?” By producing Pirate Pride that question is explored while examining one of the richest high school basketball traditions in the nation.
