Proviso East High School is a public secondary school located in Maywood, IL, at the intersection of Madison Street and First Avenue. Proviso East High School serves the educational needs BasketballProvisoEast69smallof Maywood and three other villages within Proviso Township, Cook County, Illinois: Broadview, Forest Park and Melrose Park. It is the original campus of Proviso Township High Schools District 209. Prior to being split into Proviso East and Proviso West High School in 1958, East was known as Proviso Township High School.

The 1969 basketball team coached by Tom Millikin, won its first of four Illinois High School Association state titles bringing an entire community together that had been torn apart due to racial tensions (photo: 1969 State Championship team). Led by Hall of Fame Coach Glenn Whittenberg, Proviso East captured the Class AA title in 1974 and Bill Hitt coached the Pirates to back-to-back state titles in 1991 and 1992. The 1992 team finished unscathed, ending their season with a 33-0 record. In 2012, coached by former Pirate Donnie Boyce, Proviso East took an undefeated record into the IHSA 4A championship game, succumbing to Simeon, finishing with a 32-1 record.  In 2013, the Pirates lost in the state semi-final game to the same Simeon team, capping off a successful season with a 29-5 record. 

The school is known for its extensive list of notable alumni. While perhaps best known for its connection to notable NBA players Jim Brewer, Glenn “Doc” Rivers, Michael Finley, Shannon Brown and other athletes such as former Green Bay Packer Ray Nitschke, Chicago Bear Ed O’Bradovich, Philadelphia Eagle Defensive Coordinator Jim Johnson, Jerome Sally of the 1986 Super Bowl Champion New York Giants, Houston Oiler Bill Kay, Los Angeles Ram Richard Buchanan, Atlanta Falcon Ray Buchanan, Indianapolis Colt Sergio Brown and San Francisco Giant Mike Woodard, the school has seen other alumni achieve well in other areas. American “Big Band” era singer, entertainer and television talk show host Mike Douglas, co-founder of Black Entertainment Television (BET) and team president of the WNBA Washington Mystics Sheila Crump Johnson, actress Carol Lawrence, actor Dennis Franz, and astronaut Eugene Cernan, the last human to walk on the moon, are all graduates of this prestigious learning institution.
